Sam Smith Aims To Represent The Gay Community

Singer-songwriter Sam Smith, in his recent interview with the NME, admits he wants to be the "spokesperson" for gay rights and represent the gay community globally, according to reports.

"I want to be a figure in the gay community, who speaks for gay men," Sam Smith, 23, said, who came out with his real gender category when he was still 10-years old.

He went on saying, "I sell records in countries where gay men get killed and that's a big thing for me, because maybe one person in that country will pick up my album, realize it's by a gay artist, and it might change their opinion."

Reports say that the singer's remarks came after he was being criticized the other year for reportedly not trying to become a spokesperson for the gay community.

Smith released a statement back in September 2014, saying "It sounds awful of me, but I'm really just trying to live my life and write music about it. That's what I do. I'm not trying to heal the world."

He continued, "From a young age I've always been like this, so it's been normal. My family and friends have made it feel normal and I'm not going to stop that now."

During his interview with Ellen DeGeneres back in December last year, Smith explained his earlier remarks further, to let people know what he really meant about his comments on representing the gay community.

"I'm a singer and a songwriter. I get upset sometimes, because I don't talk about it too much." Smith explained.

He added, "People say to me, 'He doesn't want to be a spokesperson for the gay community.' It's like, I do. Of course, I do. But I want to be a spokesperson for everyone. Straight people, gay people, bisexual. I don't want to be limited."
