Apps that Use the Most Data and Drain Battery Life

Are you perplexed with your phone's battery that does not seem to hold a charge, draining so quickly? Try asking yourself this question:

Are you always on Snapchat?

If you answered yes, you should know that the video and photo-messaging app has earned itself an unclear distinction as being the number one performance killer of Android phones.  AVG Technologies, an online security company stated in its quarterly report.

CBS News reported that Snapchat has dethroned past power stealers Spotify and Facebook. The app uses a phone's camera, Wi-Fi and mobile data, and GPS all at the same time. The study conducted by the security company concentrated at all the top battery and data-consuming apps running on Android smartphones and tablets.  The study used unique calibration and logs that are collected by Android's operating system in order to find out which apps had the most impact on data use, battery life, and storage capacity.

Tony Anscombe, senior security evangelist at AVG Technologies said that their goal is not to cause panic to smartphone users, but to be aware of the apps they use on a daily basis. Applications should originally improve and not to downplay your smartphone experience. With so many apps to choose from, there is a grave danger that we might overload our devices.

Aside from the phone's performance, the study also investigated other things. One of which is the most data traffic consuming apps, and for this quarter it's Tumblr. The social blogging app used more data that Netflix and Spotify. That said, Spotify was the biggest storage taker, followed by the Google Chrome browser.

Another app that consumes so much battery life is a Samsung app that gives users occasional Wi-Fi-assisted updates. Nine of the top 10 phones identified by AVG were Samsung which is a very important finding. AVG Technologies also differentiated apps that automatically turn on when you turn your device one. The app that used up the most data, drained battery life, and took up the most storage was Facebook, followed by Google Play Services and Facebook Pages Manager.

So the next time you download an app, be reminded of these findings.
