Oscar Pistorius Released From Prison a Day Early

On Valentine's Day 2013, disgraced Paralympian Oscar Pistorius killed his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. However, he spent less than one year in jail for his crime.

Pistorius shot to death Reeva Steenkamp, who was a South African model. He believed she was an intruder hiding in the bathroom.

On October 21 last year, the athlete was sentenced to five years in prison for culpable homicide. But he is now expected to spend the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

The judge said the 27-year-old sprint runner acted "too hastily" and used "excessive force" when he fired four shots through a bathroom door. She argued that a "reasonable" person would not do that. Overall, she decided his conduct was "negligent."

His release from prison to house arrest was announced on August 21,2015, but this was placed "on hold" on August 19, 2015. On October 15, 2015 it was confirmed that Pistorius was to be released from prison on October 20, 2015, however he was released on October 19, 2015.

It is believed the 28-year-old will now live at his uncle's house in Pretoria.

Pistorius will have a large number of restrictions placed on his movement. He was actually the first double-amputee to race against able bodied athletes at the Olympics in 2012.

He is also due to face prosecution for the murder of then, 29-year-old Steenkamp.

Public outrage has followed a parole board decision to recommend early release. But legal experts say Pistorius' early release was a virtual certainty from the day he was sentenced.

South Africa’s prisons are overcrowded and underfunded, so parole boards often consider correctional supervision, said Stephan Terblanche, an expert in sentencing and a professor at the University of South Africa.

Under South African law, an offender sentenced to five years or less in jail can be released after serving one-sixth of the term.

Pistorius will maintain his psychotherapy, consistent monitoring and strict guidelines under his house arrest at this uncle's home for the next four years. Not to mention, he will also be banned from the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.
