McDonald's Releases New Limited Edition Gray Burger Buns

In the wake of the controversy surrounding Burger King’s black-bunned burger, McDonald’s debuted something even more horrifying: a gray burger bun.

McDonald’s China announced the release of a limited edition burger with a bun dyed gray with black sesame.

For reasons no one has adequately been able to explain, it’s being called the 'Modern Chinese Burger' and the internet has been losing its mind over it.

Grace Brown took to Twitter to question why the bun might be grey. She wrote: "Hard to guess what inspired McDonald's Modern China Burger. Concrete? Pollution?"

The Modern China burger is served on a mantou bun, a popular Chinese steamed bread. In between its gray clutches sits a pork patty, bacon, lettuce, and Sichuan-Thousand Island dressing.

The interesting burger was recently reviewed by Time Out Beijing’s food editor, Nick Gollner. Gollner conceded that while the bun looks unappetizing, it tastes pretty good — surprisingly so. He called it the “Justin Bieber” of fast food because of its ability to make you like it even though you don’t want to.

"[Its] so much fun to hate, and really a soulless and offensive bastard deep down, but in my car, alone and utterly unwatched, you know I’m really enjoying it," he added.

While restaurants have experimented with black burgers in the past, like Burger King’s jet black kuro burger in Japan, the Internet has seemed skeptical of McDonald’s gray iteration, to say the least.

“Fluffy gray buns to represent cloud of pollution?” a writer at Time Out Beijing wondered.

“Besides using the one color typically associated with boredom, the bun also looks alarmingly like two slabs of stone,” wrote Grub Street.

In the ad, the burger is a darker grey speckled with black spots but consumers across Twitter and Instagram have been quick to point out that the reality is a pale looking, bleached out bun.

The burgers are only available in China until November 3.
