Agents Of SHIELD Cast: Powers Boothe Joins Phil Coulson’s Show In ‘Incredibly Menacing’ Role, Reprising ‘Avengers’ MCU World Security Council Member?

Three years ago, when "Avengers" came out and became the biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe project to date, Powers Boothe played one of the World Security Council members that try to talk Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) into blowing up the island of Manhattan during the Battle of New York - and now, the actor's joining the "Agents of SHIELD" cast.

Marvel announced Boothe's addition to the "Agents of SHIELD" cast earlier this week through a press release in their website, although not specifying whether he'd be reprising his role as one of the concerned members of the council.

"Gideon is incredibly menacing and in him we have a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward would fear," said Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel Television, about the new addition to the "Agents of SHIELD" cast. "Only someone of Powers' caliber could deliver the type of ominous and powerful performance we needed."

According to Den of Geek, the newest addition to the "Agents of SHIELD" cast is named Gideon Malick, a character being described as "a notorious man whose loyalties remain a mystery," though it would seem from the reference to Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) that he might be something of an old foil to the HYDRA man.

If Gideon is indeed the same Security Member, it would mean this is an incredibly powerful person with the ability to override the decisions of the director of SHIELD, a position now taken by Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), so this new addition to the "Agents of SHIELD" cast could prove very interesting when it comes to power struggle inside the agency.

As Entertainment Weekly reports, Boothe's past work in television includes "Nashville" and "24," and besides his small but crucial role in 2012's "Avengers," he was in another comic book adaptation in 2005, playing Senator Roark in "Sin City" with the likes of Jessica Alba, Clive Owen and Alexis Bledel.
