Did Facebook Post Lead to Deadly Shooting?

Be very careful what you post on social media. While we may have heard this often unsolicited advice after posting something inappropriate or unnecessary on Facebook, you can expect millions of people to post just about anything they can think of. From a funny quote to a picture of something you and your family were joking about, social media is teeming with these posts. Sadly, some people take everything they see seriously.

The incident happened just after 11 p.m., Monday night at the unit block of South Ruby Street, in Philadelphia. CBS news reported a man was shot dead in his own house for what family members think was caused by a Facebook post. 50-year-old Tony Harris was surrounded in the living room while his wife, Amber, was allegedly held at gunpoint in the kitchen, and their children all asleep upstairs. Amber recalled what happened saying, "One took me straight to the kitchen and put a gun behind my head, telling him if you keep moving they were going to blow my head off."

His family tells Eyewitness News that they believe a Facebook post on Tony's account joking about misplacing $60,000 is what made them targets. "They entered through their front door, flashing their guns, demanding the money, continuously asking where is the money," said Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark.

Police said that they're aware of the post and are looking into it as a possible motive. The family of the victim calls the crime senseless, while the police call it pointless. The alleged robbers may have gotten away with nothing. The children inside were not hurt as they were sleeping in the second floor. Though police have not found a link between the Facebook post to the killing, the family says they are sure that it was the reason why Harris was targeted.

Police have yet to identify the suspects, but are asking anyone who has information to call their Homicide hotline.

The investigation is still ongoing.
