Abby Wambach Marries Longtime Partner Sarah Huffman in Hawaiian Ceremony

Abby Wambach is married!

The Olympic superstar tied the knot with her girlfriend, fellow soccer player Sarah Huffman, in an intimate ceremony at the Villas at Po'ipu Kai in Kauai, Hawaii, on Oct. 5, TMZ reported. The couple exchanged vows on a beach at sunset in front of their family and friends.

Brandi Chastain, a teammate of Wambach's on the USA's 2003 World Cup team, said she's thrilled for the couple.

"I knew about Abby's engagement, I played with Abby for years," Chastain told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday. "I'm very happy for her like I am for all my teammates and friends who get to experience that love that goes along with getting married. I'm thrilled for her."

Wambach took to her Twitter page to thank fans for their support.

Rumors of the couples' wedding reportedly began spreading after their registry was found on TheKnot.com. In August, Huffman tweeted a picture of hand with a diamond on her ring finger.

The couple reportedly began dating in 2011. In July Huffman announced she was working with Athlete Ally, a gay right group that combats homophobia in the sports industry.

"I am excited to be an ally and stand up for people like me in the LGBT community," she wrote at the time.

According to ESPN, Wambach and Huffman were teammates last season for the Western New York Flash, the runners-up in the first-year National Women's Soccer League. Wambach led the Flash in scoring and was league runner-up for MVP. Huffman, a former standout at the University of Virginia, was a starting midfielder and defender.

They previously were teammates with the Washington Freedom and magicJack in the WUSA and WPS.  Wambach broke Mia Hamm's international scoring record this summer, and now has 161 goals in 208 games. Last summer she led the Americans to their third straight Olympic title.

The U.S. women's next game is Oct. 20 against Australia in San Antonio.
