When rumors that a 'Xena: Warrior Princess' reboot was being planned, fans immediately wondered if Lucy Lawless will return to portray the character that made her famous. However, in an interview with CBR, the 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' star admitted that she wouldn't want to return to the role if things weren't done the way the fans expected.
"Too early to say because if they don't honor the original, you know the covenant with the fans, then I wouldn't touch it with a forty-foot flagpole," she said.
Lucy Lawless also confirmed that although she might not return as the warrior princess, her presence in a possible reboot might be too much for a new star to handle.
"Their concern is that I would overshadow whoever was playing [the lead role], which may or may not be legit, but do I want to be used as some sort of warm prop for somebody else's show? What's in it for me?" Lawless said, adding that she wouldn't want to be a part of the reboot if it didn't stand for what the original show was about.
The 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' star did admit she would be looking forward to seeing a series that follows Xena and Gabrielle's journey.
"I think that character, and the relationship of Xena and Gabrielle, it's not done, we still need everything that was about, so I totally support them in making it," Lawless said. "But how that is realized is a much bigger question. I hope it's great. I hope that the fans have that again."
But it looks like Lucy Lawless would want to do a 'Xena: Warrior Princess' movie featuring the original cast, similar to what she is working on right now.
"The TV series aside, what I would love to do is a little bit like 'Ash Vs. Evil Dead' where you get the original cast together - get Renee O'Connor, me, Bruce and Ted Raimi - and do a spoof, do a comedy one-off movie," she said. "That would be so fun."
