People Choosing the Healthy Eating Trend Caused a Big Loss for Big Food Brands

Last Tuesday, the Most Powerful Women Summit held a discussion that reported an $18 billion loss in sales and market share of the top 25 food and drink companies over the past 5 years. The panel discussed how becoming an adult caused of this shift in market power as they look for foods with simpler and healthier ingredients. Transparency and simplicity is the new generation's priority when purchasing food.

Lucky's Market shopper Erica Simons said that as a consumer they hear about all the things that are in these packaged food. They may also hear its being recalled from the market and of course as a consumer everyone is left wondering why. She and her husband decided to change their diet to organic and all-natural food when they had their first child. She explained that as a mother she wants her children to be healthier and have the best option possible they can and it begins with what they eat.

Jennifer Bean, an assistant teaching professor in MU's nutrition and exercise department said the healthy eating trend won't yield positive results without consistency. She said if you worry about eating all-natural and organic food choices only because it's the trend, then stop after a month because it will not be helpful.

She added that health trends don't mean healthier people, but just they are trends. Society she said is focused on finding a quick and easy solution to being healthier when the fact is there is none.

It's not about being sexy or glamorous, but having a balance between eating fiber, fruits and vegetables and taking care of yourself. Everything else that you see is just marketing strategy. Lastly, she made a point to remind people to be careful about what they think is healthy for them because labels can be misleading.
