Ruben Studdard on 'The Biggest Loser': 'American Idol' Winner Joins Season 15 as Heaviest Contestant at 462

Ruben Studdard is on a mission to lose weight.

Studdard, who won the second season of "American Idol", will try his hand at another reality show, as he looks to shed weight in the upcoming season of NBC's "The Biggest Loser." The Grammy-nominated singer will participate in the 15th season of the weight-loss show as its heaviest participant at 462 pounds, according to the Associated Press.

The singer said he was looking forward to the lifestyle change.

"That's what I've been taught, as you know," the 35-year-old told the AP. "I have to get up every day and give myself the two hours that I need to keep myself together before I even get into any music stuff, and that's just going to have to be how I do it."

The Birmingham, Ala., native currently suffers from sleep apnea and high blood pressure because of his weight, according to the singer's "The Biggest Loser" bio. Studdard said he's looking forward to purchasing new clothes after the season was over.

"When I turned 34, I realized I wasn't young anymore," Studdard said, "and that I wanted to live a long time. It was time for a change."

Studdard has been on his best behavior, foodwise. The singer said he did not get one last pig out session before making his way to "The Biggest Loser" ranch.

"You know, the funny thing is, I was actually working the night before, so I didn't get an opportunity to have a pig-out session, no," Studdard said in a phone call, according to the Huffington Post. "I actually flew from a concert to the ranch. I'm sure I probably would have had a piece of cake or something before I went up to the ranch for months and months."

Studdard said after the show, he'll record his sixth album, but he will also make sure to "give every day of my life some Ruben time."

"That's what I've been taught, as you know," he said. "I have to get up every day and give myself the two hours that I need to keep myself together before I even get into any music stuff, and that's just going to have to be how I do it."

Studdard is not the only celebrity in the 2013 "The Biggest Loser" class.

Olympian Holley Mangold, who represented the U.S. in weightlifting during the 2012 London Games, will try to get in shape for the 2016 games while on the show. Holley is the sister of New York Jets center Nick Mangold.

"I want to inspire people to love who they are, but to know that if they want to change something about themselves, they can," Mangold told "The Biggest Loser."

"The Biggest Loser" returns Oct. 8 at 8 p.m on NBC.
