Former Trader Joe's president Doug Rauch is planning to open a store that sells expired food.
The store called, "The Daily Table," will be a hybrid of a grocery store and a restaurant. The store will prepared food along with fruits and vegetables, Rauch told NPR. Rauch's inspiration for the project was driven from a massive amount of food people waste every day.
A 2012 report found that consumers trash about 40 percent of their food.
According a study from the Natural Resources Defense Council, due to uncertainty about the different labels including "best by", "use by", and "best before" customers are wasting food that has not actually gone bad or eating food that's no longer safe to consume.
Based on a survey by the Food Marketing Institute, 9 out of 10 Americans throw away food needlessly. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reported global food waste costs the economy $750 billion a year, according to Reuters.
The report revealed global food waste results in 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions and annual economic losses result in billion a year. Every year about a third of all food for human consumption is wasted, along with all the energy, water and chemicals needed to produce it and dispose of it.
According to the Boston Globe, many inexpensive meals available are often unhealthy and "The Daily Table" wants to change that by targeting lower-income families in the Boston area.
