'Elvis' actor, Randy Quaid and his wife were each held with a $500,000 bail in Vermont on October 12, Monday, with charges for escaping out of the country five years ago after being charged with vandalism in California, according to reports.
On Friday evening, the two were caught at the Canadian border while they were trying to re-enter the United States. Reports say that the Canadian officials allowed Evi Quaid's citizenship, however, denied Randy Quaid's permanent residence.
Besides being engaged in vandalism charges, the two are also reportedly wanted in Santa Barbara, California, with felony charges filed back in the year 2010 after they were seen squatting in their home's guest house which they previously owned.
Reports say that Randy and his wife had separate appearances in court on Monday, the actor arrived 28 miles north in St. Albans while his wife was brought to a state women's prison situated in Burlington.
Upon appearing in court, Ryan reportedly argued for a lower bail, claiming that it was the bail bondsman's fault for failing to notify him about his scheduled court appearances.
"We heard about it through the Internet that we had missed this court appearance that we didn't know anything about," Quaid said.
After hearing Quaid's appeal, Judge Alison Arms from the criminal division of the Franklin superior court repeatedly said that a $500,000 was high for a property crimes cases, but insisted she was not convinced to lower it.
After asking Quaid's lawyer for any support for the appeal, Arms said "The court has nothing that validates anything that he [Quaid] is saying. What the court has right now is a $500,000 warrant from a judge in California."
Franklin County state's attorney, Jim Hughes asked for a three-day continuance of the case, adding that for a reason the California's courts were closed during the Columbus Day holiday, he was not able to comply some required paper works.
Meanwhile, he had also asked the Vermont court to suspend the bail set in California, saying "If we're talking about $500,000 bail for breaking a mirror, that's an unusual situation. And I don't believe it would be happening if it weren't for the fact that he is, quote, celebrity."
Randy Quaid was nominated for a Golden Globe Award, Academy Award and BAFTA Award for portraying a role in the American comedy-drama film, 'The Last Detail'.
