The New York Comic-Con proved to be a great launching point for the trailer of MTV's new fantasy show 'The Shannara Chronicles,' which is based on the works of author Terry Brooks. The series, which stars 'The Carrie Diaries' actor Austin Butler, showcased stunning landscapes and gorgeous cinematography in only two minutes.
The synopsis for the series reads as follows:
"'The Shannara Chronicles' is a new TV series based on the best-selling fantasy novels by Terry Brooks. Set thousands of years after the destruction of our civilization, the story follows an Elven Princess, Amberle, a half-human half-elf, Wil, and a human, Eretria, as they embark on a quest to stop a Demon army from destroying the Four Lands."
Austin Butler stars as Wil, a human who happens to be half-elf. He must team up with Amberle ('Downton Abbey' actress Poppy Drayton) and the human Eretria (Ivana Baquero of 'Pan's Labyrinth') to save the Four Lands from destruction.
One noticeable aspect of 'The Shannara Chronicles' trailer is the instant confirmation that the Four Lands is actually the post-apocalyptical Earth that has been occupied by magical beings. Although Terry Brooks chose to reveal the truth about the Four Lands later in the book, the series may choose to let the audience in on the secret right away.
The trailer also shows 'Lord of the Rings' alum John Rhys-Davies as the Elven King Eventine Elessedil as well as 'The Hobbit' star Manu Bennett as the warrior Allanon. Both actors have appeared in several fantasy films and TV shows between them, so their presence in the series is a welcome sight.
'The Shannara Chronicles' is executive produced by 'Iron Man' director Jon Favreau and Terry Brooks, who admits he is happy with the show's adaptation of his works.
"It's very good," Brooks told Paste Magazine last July. "I don't know how people are going to receive it, but yesterday we did the panel, showing the trailer and having people present, and it was dynamite."
'The Shannara Chronicles' will air on MTV on January 2016.
