After a week, New York Giants that player Daniel Fells was placed on injured reserved with a staph infection, reports has it that he is in danger of losing his foot.
According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, the 32-year-old tight end for the NFL team is fighting Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which made him miss Sunday’s game and could potentially have more dire consequences.
The Giants announced their plans to place Fells on IR last Monday because of an ankle injury that had been troubling him for weeks and caused him to miss last Sunday's win over the Buffalo Bills.
After evaluating the injury, it was decided that he had a staph infection which required treatment.
But it wasn't until his wife took him this week to the emergency room, as he ran a temperature of 104-degree that doctors discovered he had contracted the potentially fatal bug MRSA.
Fells has already had five surgeries and he will likely have more operations as doctors attempt to stop the aggressive spread of the infection. They are also concerned that it has already spread through his ankle bone. But the biggest fear is the MRSA could spread from Fells' bone and make its way into his bloodstream, which could be deadly.
Fells who is best known for his blocking powers is an undrafted free agent. He's had 12 touch downs during his entire career.
Currently, there is a very serious chance that the fall out from the infection can end his seven year career in the NFL.
Doctors are clueless how Fells contracted the infection and New York's players were warned about it's danger and the team's facility was disinfected after the incident.
The team officials, including general manager Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin, took the time to visit Fells in advance as the team's game against the San Francisco 49ers will be on Sunday night.
This was not the first time the Giants have been forced to worry about a player losing an appendage.
The Giants head into their matchup with the 49ers on Sunday Night Football with a record of 2-2.
