'Black Mass': Johnny Depp's New Film Puts the Star on the Map Yet Again

After years of being off the spotlight, Johnny Depp is making a comeback with his new film, Black Mass, in which he'll play the character of James Whitney Bulger. As per Telegraph, the film earned him an Oscar nomination as he perfectly portrayed the role of a patriarch killer who ruled Boston for years.

As per the new website, the story is based on the book of the same title, written by two Boston reporters who Bulger's story and his FBI connection.

In order for him to dig deeper into his character, Depp visited Bulger in jail, he then informed the news website on how he arranged the visit. His attempt however failed simply because Bulger wasn't impressed on how the book was made.

"I made a request through his attorney to sit down with him to attempt to sponge some mannerisms and voice and take as much as I could from him, I wasn't interested in asking him about his crimes or anything like that, I just wanted some personal idiosyncrasies. But I got the message back to say Jimmy had declined my visit because of his dislike for the book and especially his dislike for the two Boston Globe reporters who had nagged him for 20 years."

Depp then added:

"What attracted me to Jimmy Bulger were the various facets of his personality and his humanity, because I felt that the only way I could approach playing a character like him was to find his human side first and then map that out to see where it took the turn.

"He was a very complicated man. I think there's a very sensitive side to him and he could be a caring, lovely family man who worshiped his brother and was very loyal to the community. There was something poetic about what he was able to do, being a proud Irish immigrant, loyal to his neighborhood, a great caregiver to his mother and very close to his brother. But his business was violence. "

The film became a great success. As per Daily Mail, Amber Heard supported her husband during the film's premiere at the BFI Film Festival. The couple walked hand in hand as they graced though the red carpet with their all black ensembles. Their festival photos can be seen on the Daily Mail website.
