At least 89 people have reportedly become ill after eating Chobani Greek yogurt manufactured in Twin Falls, the Food and Drug Administration reported.
According to The Times News, Food and Drug Administration, spokeswoman Tamara Ward said that some have described nausea and cramps.No link has been confirmed between the illnesses and the yogurt.
Last week, Chobani removed some of their Greek yogurt products from supermarket shelves after reports of "swelling or bloating" in cups. Grocery stores to destroy 35 varieties of yogurt reported to have been contaminated by a mold, commonly found in diary, may be to blame.
The company has voluntarily cooperated with retailers to remove and replace containers with the code 16-012 and expiration dates Sept. 11 to Oct. 7.
According to the Huffington Post, Chobani spokeswoman Amy Juaristi said 95 percent of the tainted product had been destroyed. Health officials also reported that the yogurt is not a public health threat.
The company had identified the source of the issue and is reportedly taking the necessary steps to prevent a second incident.
According to the FDA mold can as an opportunistic pathogen for those with compromised immune systems.
"There is nothing more important to us than the quality of our products. We're currently in the process of voluntarily removing some from shelves that simply weren't up to snuff," the company wrote on their Facebook page, in a post titled "Our Promise to You".
Numerous customers have written on Chobani's Facebook page and blog complaining of bloated containers and yogurt that tasted foul or was bubbling out of the foil cover.
One person described her cup as "unnervingly fizzy," another said the cups were like "yogurt soup" and another said it tasted like "wine".
Chobani is based in New Berlin, N.Y. and was founded in 2005.
