Amy Houlden, a 22-year-old student, cut her mouth as she chewed on glass when she was eating a pork chop. The student settled a claim of €60,000 for personal injuries from the company Dunnes Stores.
The complainant said that she had been wounded by a glass inside a Mexican sauce that has been used as marinate for the pork.
She said Sean Houlden, her father on September 12th 2013 bought the chops which had been packaged in a Mexican marinade according to her Civil Bill next to Dunnes Stores, Cornelscourt, Foxrock, Co Dublin.
The pork chops remained in the packaging overnight before cooking it on 13th of September, Friday. The pork chops looks appetizing so they didn't notice anything until she claimed that she had a cut inside her mouth due glass chips which had been inside the marinated pork chops. At her mouthfull of the chops she started to feel that there was something inside her mouth then a sensation of pain followed.
She was then taken to St. Coomcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown, Co Dublin, where an anit- tetanus injection was administered to her, followed by an X-ray of her lungs
Unfortunately, the doctor warned them that the glass will not be seen on the X-ray but if there are possible damages made by the glass debris, it would be revealed. She was then taken out of the hospital with a word of warning to observe symptoms of vomiting.
The good news is that after medication she just developed a sore throat.
Talks between the two parties settled the case according to Barrister William Martin Smith along with Murphys Solicitors. The terms for the settlement of the case were not publicized in court.
Rebecca Lacy, counsel for Dunnes Stores Limited, had to go into a full defense in the proceedings which were settled without permission of legal responsibility.
