Chobani Recall: Greek Yogurt From Shelves For 'Swelling' in Cups

Chobani is removing some of their Greek yogurt products from supermarket shelves after reports of "swelling or bloating" in cups, according to ABC News.

An investigation found particular type of mold, commonly found in diary, may be to blame. The company is cooperating with retailers to remove and replace containers with the code 16-012 and expiration dates Sept. 11 to Oct. 7.

According to ABC News, there have been no reports on how many of Chobani's cups were removed or what varieties of flavors were affected. Chobani said its company only uses high-quality, natural ingredients.

The effort was voluntary and Chobani is not issuing a formal recall. Representatives for other Chobani retailers, including Walgreens and Kroger, have not immediately responded to inquiries.

A representative for Kroger, the nation's largest traditional supermarket operator, said Chobani issued a product withdrawal Friday.

"It was not a food safety issue," Kroger spokesman Keith Dailey said in an email.

Chobani, an American brand of Greek-style yogurt produced by Chobani Inc., said the products in question originated from its Idaho facility, which only represents five percent of Chobani's total production.

"There is nothing more important to us than the quality of our products. We're currently in the process of voluntarily removing some from shelves that simply weren't up to snuff," the company wrote on their Facebook page, in a post titled "Our Promise to You".

Numerous customers have written on Chobani's Facebook page and blog complaining of bloated containers and yogurt that tasted foul or was bubbling out of the foil cover.

One person described her cup as "unnervingly fizzy," another said the cups were like "yogurt soup" and another said it tasted like "wine."

Chobani is based in New Berlin, N.Y. and was founded in 2005. Customers with the affected code dates should contact its customer service team at care@chobani.com to get replacement products.
