A day after McDonald's announced the addition of Mighty Wings to their menu starting Sept. 9, the fast food chain's Canadian franchise introduced the first vegetarian meal in more than a decade.
According to Canada's National Post, a vegetarian entrée was in high demand amongst residential customers. The wraps are meant to appeal to a broader range of groups than burgers.
"People always ask for the veggie burger. So this we're going to surprise them with," McDonald's Canada CEO John Betts told Canada's National Post. "It's a much more contemporary product, and I think it tastes a lot better."
According to the Huffington Post, the first vegetarian entrée, Mediterranean Veggie and Sante Fe Veggie wraps, is stuffed with garlic hummus, feta cheese, tomatoes, cucumber, red onions, lettuce and a feta-based sauce.
The Santa Fe wrap includes tomatoes, roasted corn, black beans, a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese, red onions, lettuce, tortilla chips, chili lime glaze and a Southwest-inspired sauce. Both are made with a whole wheat tortilla.
This is not the first time McDonald's has offered healthy dishes. Earlier this year, McWraps debuted on McDonald's U.S. menu as a permanent offer. Customers looking to eat a bit healthier can order McWraps without chicken and with extra veggies.
McDonald's based in the U.S. have never advertised a sandwich, wrap or salad served without meat, the Huffington Post reported. But according to a McDonald's spokesperson that might change very soon.
According to the Huffington Post, McDonald's U.S. spokeswoman, Ofelia Casillas, said the fast food franchise is considered a giant and is "always testing new options based on what our customers are looking for."
