After Cameron Monaghan was hyped in media to portray a character that very much seemed to be the "Gotham" Joker, his Jerome was recently killed off in quite the violent manner, and it was shown that the position of Batman's nemesis is still available on the show starring Benjamin McKenzie as James Gordon - could there be a female Joker on the way?
In the past, a handful of great actors have played the DC Comics villain, including Cesar Romero in the 60s "Batman" series, Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's film, Mark Hamill in the 90s animated series, Heath Ledger on "The Dark Knight" and most recently Jared Leto's upcoming performance in "Suicide Squad" - but could the "Gotham" Joker make a gender twist?
According to Bruno Heller, the "Gotham" showrunner, there's definitely a possibility that the "Gotham" Joker is female, as the series delves deeper into characters' origin stories; speaking to Comic Book, Heller made it clear that they had "absolutely considered" the idea.
"One of the central themes of the DC world is transformation and revelation," said Heller, when asked about a possible female "Gotham" Joker. "Absolutely, those kinds of - I wouldn't want to call it playing with people's expectations or gender expectations - but we've absolutely considered the possibility of a female Joker, and we haven't... well I'll stop myself from saying more because I won't be able to stop revealing things."
Cinema Blend reports that the female "Gotham" Joker theory says Barbara Kean (played by Barbara Richards), who started out as Gordon's fiancée only to become a villainess, could ultimately become Batman's arch-enemy, as she not only admired supposed Joker Jerome, but she's given her own signs of madness in the past.
According to Movie Web, the second season of "Gotham" has been subtitled "Rise of the Villains," but that doesn't mean they've lasted long, with Jerome's death killing what seemed like a sure-thing theory.
It seems like the "Gotham" Joker won't be like anything we've ever seen!
