It's been more than 20 years since the "Space Oddity" himself wrote original music for a project that would go on to play on a screen, but it was definitely worth the wait: the newest David Bowie TV song, "Blackstar," promises to be haunting in the best possible way.
This new David Bowie TV song was written specifically for "The Last Panthers," a French and British co-production starring Samantha Morton and John Hurt, a crime drama based on the real-life jewel thieves group Pink Panthers that studies the world of European high-end crime.
According to Rolling Stone, this marks the first David Bowie TV or film song writing in more than two decades, as the last time the "Man Who Stole The World" wrote a similar piece was in 1993, when his "Real Cool World" single appeared on the film "Cool World," and he also wrote a song in the 1998 "Rugrats Movie" that was ultimately edited out of the film.
As Billboard reports, speaking of the latest David Bowie TV song project, the multitalented musician and actor posted a long intro by the upcoming series' director, Johan Renck (who worked on "Breaking Bad" and a number of Madonna videos) wrote an explanation as the process behind how the song came to be.
"I showed Mr. Bowie the two first episodes in the rough state they were at the time, and he liked what he saw very much," writes Renck, speaking about David Bowie's TV song. "We discussed the various aspects of the show; naturally the plot line, but also the underlying currents of guilt and personality flaws. We talked about the dark heart of Europe. We talked about the biblical aspects of human nature. He asked if there was anything else to see, so I showed him the first concept board I had just made for the title sequence - images from the show laced with chimaeras and demons from the worlds of Bosch and Grunewald. That's when he said go - it all fits."
According to BoingBoing, "The Last Panthers" premieres on France's Canal+ and Sky Atlantic on November 12 - but you can hear a bit of David Bowie's TV song "Blackstar" for it below!
