Francis Ford Coppola Talks About 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' And 'Twilight!' What Is The Best Vampire Film?

In 1992, a different side of the world's most famous vampire was revealed in the film 'Bram Stoker's Dracula.' The movie was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and featured Gary Oldman as the immortal bloodsucker who is simply looking for the new incarnation of his dead wife.

'Bram Stoker's Dracula' became one of the most well-known vampire films that led to a more romantic look at the monsters. However, Francis Ford Coppola told Yahoo! that the concept of romanticizing Dracula was not his idea.

"I didn't write the script; I was just hired as a director," Coppola said. "But I liked the fact that the script was similar to the book. I read the entire book, and I felt if I could do it the way the book was, that might be fun."

Francis Ford Coppola also confirmed that Columbia Pictures was more concerned about him shooting in a different location than the unabashed sensuality of the film.

"In those days, it was after 'Apocalypse Now,' [and] studios were frightened about directors going off to some faraway location and running out of control," he said. "So when I told them that I wanted to make it all right in their studio - right there at their [Columbia's] stages - they were so relieved, they didn't really pay much attention to the style."

The veteran director shared his opinion about vampire films like 'Twilight.'

"Even though the Vampire myth had what you might call a renaissance with television and Twilight - which was kind of Romeo and Juliet as vampires - there were never two years that went without a new Dracula or vampire story," Coppola said. "[Vampires] have always had a big hold on the movie audience right from the very beginning, and certainly the greatest Dracula of all was 1929's Nosferatu, which was made as a silent film in Germany."

Francis Ford Coppola also revealed some of his favorite vampires.

"I loved Bela Lugosi as Dracula, and I remember John Carradine was a pretty good Dracula," he admitted.
