The Coffee Masters competition was inaugurated in London last May but has now made its way to the Big Apple. It is a multidisciplinary on-the-fly marathon and is described by Jordan Michelman, editor of Sprudge.com, as the Nascar of coffee competitions. The F1 would have to be given to the World Barista Competition, the world's first and largest coffee competition.
The competition featured 20 contestants from all over the world who must prove their mastery of every facet of coffee making. Cupping, or the art of coffee tasting, was demonstrated. Contestants had to memorize the flavor profiles of six cups of coffee and arrange them in order. Next up was brewing. Contestants had to brew coffee using manual techniques to produce the best cup of coffee.
Signature drink was also showcased which was a coffee-based cocktail. Espresso blending, which is self-explanatory, was also an event. But everyone's favorite was handling orders. In this event, baristas had to prove their skills by making ten drinks in just nine minutes.
The finals pitted Ryan Fischer from Commonwealth Coffee in Denver against Ben "The Latte Art Cowboy" Murrow from Melbourne, Australia's St. Ali's Coffee Roasters. The Aussie legend emerged at the competition's grand prize winner. For his efforts, he got $5,000, Coffee Masters reported.
The competition will be held again in NYC next year sometime in September. Applications will be open starting May 1, 2016.
