The neo-soul singer joined the likes of Sam Smith, Kehlani and Charlie Puth as she covers Drake's 'Hotline Bling' as part of her soon to be released mixtape.
The song was originally titled as a remix to D.R.A.M's "Cha Cha." "Hotline Bling" has since become a mainstay at charts and reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The 44-years-old Badu turned Drake's song into a sultry soulful rejig as she puts in her own flavor, turning it into seven minutes long. She "starts off with a fairly faithful rendition, and ends up somewhere completely different," as Billboard describes her epic remix. The song comes with her own spin by tweaking some of its lyrics. Instead of "you used to call on my cell phone," you will hear the soulful voice of Badu singing the same line but using the word "cellular device" as she perfectly breaks down every syllable there is.
Badu worked with three different producers for this glorious piece. She also puts in jokes while she drops her fake answering machine in the middle of the song:
"You've reached the Erykah Badu hotline," the automated sounding voice says. "If you're calling for some s- in general, press four," and "If you're calling to ask for some free tickets for a city near you and knows she don't really f- with you like that, press seven," are some of lines to look out for.
Badu hasn't released an album in five years and she tweeted this remix, her followers are totally digging this new sounds from the "Love of My Life" singer, "this will be on reeeeepppppeeaatttt," tweeted one.
