He hasn't been cast as James Bond yet, but Idris Elba is sure to appear on the big screen again soon as a different kind of villain in the sequel 'Star Trek Beyond.'
Not much is known about the character Idris Elba will be playing in the film, although there have been speculations that he will be a Klingon. However, 'Star Trek Beyond' actor and screenwriter Simon Pegg was quick to deny the rumors.
So what kind of villain will Idris Elba be playing in 'Star Trek Beyond?' As the British actor tells MTV, definitely not a boring one.
"Simon and the team have written a very interesting, complex journey for my character," he said. "You've never seen me play a character like this."
What makes the 'Star Trek Beyond' villain so different?
"I think 'Star Trek' has prided themselves as being quite classic when it comes to villains, like 'he's a guy who wants to end the world,' there's no doubt about that," Elba said. "But in this version of the film, there's a slightly different twist to that. It's quite an interesting journey, which I think is groundbreaking for the franchise. But, it still keeps with the 'classic bad guy is a classic bad guy' tone."
Being a villain is no easy task. Idris Elba admits he had to work long hours on 'Star Trek Beyond.'
"It's been hard work. I've been doing 18-hour days," he said. "It's tough work, but I'm looking forward to people seeing this film."
'Star Trek Beyond' is directed by Justin Lin and also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Sofia Boutella and Joe Taslim. The film was originally scheduled for release on July 8 before it was moved back a few weeks to July 22, 2016.
