Damian Lewis Bond: Before ‘Spectre,’ New Post-Daniel James Bond Casting Rumors Surface, Idris Elba And Tom Hardy NOT Lead Contenders

For months, Idris Elba fans have tried to put the "Luther" actor forward to become James Bond, with former 007 agent Pierce Brosnan definitely supporting the idea - but could Damian Lewis' Bond be closer to reality?

A decade ago, when Daniel Craig was announced as Brosnan's replacement to play the deadly MI6 agent with a license to kill, the Internet was flooded with criticism as it was the first time ever that a blonde star would take on the role, and he has been the biggest critical and box office success as 007 since Sean Connery - could Damian Lewis' Bond be next now?

According to The Daily Mail, the "Dreamcatcher" actor is currently the lead contender to fill Craig's shoes, after the release of "Spectre" and a fifth film of the franchise he's reportedly contracted for, so Damian Lewis' Bond is starting to look like a real possibility.

The Sunday Mirror was the first to break the rumor of Damian Lewis' Bond casting, though nothing's remotely official as of yet: it seems like the Emmy-winning actor, most famous for his roles in "Band of Brothers" and most recently in "Homeland," has been given an "unofficial nod" as the next incarnation of the superspy, which would make him the seventh actor to play the iconic British role.

Of course, Damian Lewis' Bond would see the actor become the first-ever red-haired version of the role, but it should come as no problem after blonde Craig and reported option Elba, who would have become the first black actor to portray 007.

In the meantime, other actors rumored to fill in Craig's shoes have been Australian Oscar nominee Hugh Jackman and British "Mad Max: Fury Road" actor Tom Hardy.

According to Forbes, though, due to Lewis' age, it's unlikely that he could turn into the next 007, as he would be close to 50 by the time the first Damian Lewis Bond film would be released, making him the oldest actor to take on the role.
