Andrea Antonelli Dies in Motorcyle Crash During World Supersport Race in Moscow

Italian motorcyclist Andrea Antonelli died in a tragic crash at World Supersport race in Moscow, World Superbike organizers confirmed.

The team Goeleven Kawasaki motorcyclist lost control of his bike on the first lap. His head collided with motorcyclist, Lorenzo Zanettim, who according to reports was also unseated.

The 25-year-old was transported to the course's medical center but died after falling to regain consciousness.

The Castiglione di Lago rider, achieved 14 podium finishes in European Superstock races. He started from second on the grind in Moscow. Antonelli is the second Italian to die from the competition in two years. In 2011, World Superbike rider Marco Simoncelli was killed during Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.

According to the Daily Mail, Dr. Massimo Corbascio, who worked on Antonelli following his accident believes there was "absolutely nothing" the emergency clinic team could do to revive him.

A statement published on worldsbk.com read:

"During today's FIM World Supersport race at 1:32 pm Italian rider Andrea Antonelli (Team Goeleven Kawasaki) suffered a serious accident on the straight between Turn 14 and Turn 15 wherein he sustained critical injuries.

"The race was stopped with the red flag and the rider was immediately taken to an ambulance where the medical staff worked to resuscitate him. Despite their efforts, Andrea sadly succumbed to his injuries at 2:10 pm local time."

The state goes on to say that all members involved in motorcycle championships extends their deepest condolences to Andrea's family friends, team and the Italian Federation.

The Supersport race was stopped and postponed for an afternoon restart before being cancelled indefinitely. FIM, Dorna and YMS Promotion also decided to cancel all activities scheduled for the rest of the day.
