JK Rowling is revealing new secrets!
Every now and then, JK Rowling still gives some background facts on some "Harry Potter" characters. Quite recently, the 50-year-old author revealed the haunting past of Aunt Petunia, in addition to a law that Hermione Granger broke.
But now, JK Rowling offers a new look into Harry Potter's family, thank to an essay she wrote on the newly re-designed Pottermore website. Entitled, "The Potter Family," JK Rowling goes far back as the 12th century to trace back Harry Potter's ancestry.
The author also notes that the Potter family was content "with a solid and comfortable existence in the backwaters," up until James Potter "pushed them to the forefront of the wizarding community," as per Entertainment Tonight.
JK Rowling unveils where the Potter last name came from - a wizard named Linfred of Stinchcombe. Known as "a locally well-beloved and eccentric man," Linfred was nicknamed "the Potterer" before it was shortened.
The "Harry Potter" series author talks about Linfred:
"Linfred was a vague and absent-minded fellow whose Muggle neighbours often called upon his medicinal services. None of them realized that Linfred's wonderful cures for pox and ague were magical; they all thought him a harmless and lovable old chap, pottering about in his garden with all his funny plants.
"[...] Linfred's eldest son, Hardwin, married a beautiful young with by the name of Iolanthe Peverell, who came from the village of Godric's Hollow. She was the granddaughter of Ignotus Peverell. In the absence of male heirs, she, the eldest of her generation, had inherited her grandfather's invisibility cloak."
Not only that, but historians also say that Linfred was the inventor of remedies like Skele-gro and Pepperup Potion. On the other hand, Harry Potter's grandfather, Fleamont Potter, was the man behind the Sleekeazy's Hair Potion.
The "newly imagined" Pottermore was launched on Tuesday. Not only does it feature works by JK Rowling herself, but also has articles (and listicles) from the Pottermore staff.
