Zoe Chambers, 28 and Charlie Cloughlin, 27 both from Haslingfield, Cambridge prepared something different for their wedding. They actually asked FoodCycle, a charity that feeds poor people with recycled food from supermarkets, to prepare two delectable dishes for their reception. The two dishes made use of ingredients that supermarkets are about to throw as trash.
The food prepared by the Food Cycle was loved by their 150 guests who were aware where the food came from. The couple made a cash donation to FoodCycle, doing something different from the usual wedding nowadays. Guests enjoyed the two dishes that the charity whipped up for them. The Panzanella salad was made from tomatoes, bread and potatoes that were thrown away by supermarkets. They also made Moroccan style mixed vegetables using ingredients past their best before dates. Zoe and Charles bought a beef from a local pub for the main course as reported in Daily Mail UK.
The groom proudly said, "All of that food was collected and prepared by a charity called FoodCycle in Cambridge. Had that food not been used for our wedding it would be all gone in the bin. For the main course we had some beef which we bought from a pub but for the other two courses we were unaware of what we were going to get. All the guests were aware and it went down really well, everyone loved the food and everyone loved the idea. We talked about it at large."
The couple exchanged vows at a village cricket pitch in Newton, Cambridge then they had their wedding reception at the grounds of Newton Hall. It seems that the food isn't the only thing that is recycled. The groom added that almost all of the materials used for the wedding were materials, "We had little jam jars with candles in them, lots of bean cans with flowers in them and all the timber for the signs we put up was recycled. The wedding was entirely designed ourselves. We got married outside on a cricket pitch and everything else we organised through people we know. We decided if we were going to pay someone to design and cook food for our wedding then it would be perfect if it was FoodCycle."
The bride, Zoe, actually works for a food sustainability organization. They wanted to give FoodCycle publicity it deserved, "By having FoodCycle cater our wedding we wanted to give them some publicity and at the same time have a wedding close to our hearts."
Owner of FoodCycle Alex Collis was very happy to be a part of the couple's wedding, "It was a really lovely day and showed what Food Cycle is all about, we got lots of compliments and somebody said to me as a vegetarian that it was the best wedding food she'd ever eaten."
