It is a well-known fact that many couples or family, or an individual, when they go somewhere else for avacation or for a business trip, they usually leave there houses unattended, or with people who they know and trust. But if you are one of those individual, or couple who hires housesitters to look after your home, and pets if you have one, then you might have to rethink about your choice. Recently, a housesitter rented out the house he was watching over the week through AirBnB, banking in $2,000, while the owners were away.
John and Ed (not their real name, changed for privacy reason) were headed to the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada when they decided to hire a guy from the site Trustedhousesitters.com. According to Ed, "We used him twice before, but met him in person for the first visit and then got a police check and followed up his references. He seemed a nice enough guy." The couple only found out about the deceit by a stroke of luck, when the ones who rented the place out were their friends.
Their friends called them exclaiming how they were grateful for John and Ed to rent out their place while they were away. The couple was taken aback and said that it must have been a mistake but they got an answer of no it was not, "pictures of you both, your car, are all in the house, there's no way that it could have been a mistake." The housesitter just moved some things around like the couples cutout of Niall Horan, which was moved to the garage.
Trustedhousesitter.com had no comment on the issue when they were contacted. AirBnB on the other hand removed the house listing on their site. The couple is now thinking of pursuing a civil lawsuit. Ed added that they felt violated about the incident.
