It looks like Charlie's Angels are planning a return to the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter has just broke the news that the famous trio of crime-fighting ladies are getting a new lease on life thanks to Sony and Pitch Perfect 2 director and Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks.
Banks made her directorial debut with this summer's smash hit acapella sequel. The film has grossed $285 million at the global box office. The article says that Banks is also in talks to direct a Young Adult fantasy film for Universal.
According to THR, Banks, together with husband and producing partner Max Handelman, is already looking for a writer to tackle the new project.
It's been over a decade since the characters were last on the big screen. Back in 2000, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu starred in a successful big screen reinvention of the classic 70's TV show directed by McG. The film grossed $264 million worldwide on a budget of $90 million.
The sequel, 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle was not as well received critically and commercially which put the franchise in hibernation for the next 8 years.
In 2011, ABC attempted to bring the threesome back to television with Minka Kelly, Rachel Taylor, and Annie Ilonzeh as modernized versions of the characters. The series bombed and was quickly cancelled after four episodes.
Banks' appointment would be a huge win for female film makers, who are still struggling to get recognition in the industry. According to the Guardian, only 23% of directing positions and 26% of key behind-the-scenes jobs are occupied by women.
It isn't too much better acting wise either. Last month we reported on a study which showed the shocking lack of diversity in Hollywood.
