McDonald's has launched a brand new ground chicken burger which could be set to become as popular as the Big Mac.
But fans of the fast food chain may have to wait to sample the new sandwich, as it is only being rolled out in Tampa Bay, Florida.
The ground chicken burger is a first for the fast-food chain. A ground quarter-pound patty of breast and thigh meat on a new 'gourmet' potato bun.
The new regional-specific item debuted Monday after local McDonald’s operators worked with the company’s chicken supplier Keystone Foods for 18 months to craft a more heath-conscious alternative to traditional burgers, the Tampa Bay Business Journal reports.
The chicken burger concept, which is a 50/50 blend of white and dark ground chicken, was born from the desire of 37 Tampa Bay area McDonald’s operators looking to appeal to new customers.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that these burgers will only be here for a short time, which will give McDonald's enough time to see if their new chicken creations will be a success in other markets.
There has been a huge advertising campaign in the build up to debut, with billboards posted around Tampa Bay showing a spatula and a cryptic countdown to #FlippinAwesome.
Now they are finally here and, with each burger coming in at under 400 calories, McDonald's appear to be trying to attract the health conscious crowd.
The new option is almost half as calorific as a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese
With these burgers and the introduction of breakfast all day, McDonald's is definitely making moves to have more people eat at its restaurants.
McDonald's has been working hard to shake off its unhealthy reputation.
This latest attempt is only being offered in the Tampa Bay area for now but Blake Casper, who owns around 50 McDonald's franchises in the area, was hopeful it could be rolled out nationwide although he admitted, "we have to sell a heck of a lot of them."
