Manda Packing Company recently announced a recall of 20,166 pounds of roast beef deli meat on April 10. The recall was due to a potential bacteria breakout.
Manda plans to recall an additional 468,000 pounds of deli meats this week such as turkey breast, ham, tasso pork, ham shanks, hog headcheese, corned beef and pastrama.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said the factory, based in Baker, Louisiana is recalling their roast beef because of a potential Listeria monocytogenes breakout. The bacteria can cause listeriosis, "an uncommon, but potentially fatal disease,"according to ABC News.
According to ABC, the potentially tainted products were packaged on Feb. 27 and shipped to deli stores in "Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma, Illinois and Tennessee."
Additional areas affected are South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia and Missouri. The products involved in the initial recall, according to ABC are "Manda Supreme Roast Beef, Four Star Cajun Roast Beef, Four Star Roast Beef, Cajun Prize Roast Beef, Manda Supreme Natural Roast Beef, Manda Natural Roast Beef and Manda New Orleans Style."
"Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis," the USDA said in a statement. "But the disease can be serious and sometimes fatal for those with weakened immune systems, and it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
"We are committed to work with USDA in reviewing and enhancing our food safety system so we can continue to ensure that our products are safe, wholesome and worthy of our brand name," said Josh Yarborough, Director of Quality Assurance for Manda.
Manda released an additional statement, according to Inquisitr, with information detailing the source of the outbreak and what sell-by dates to look out for.
"...Recently, Manda recalled some of our meat products. This affects only products from our Baker, Louisiana facility. Our sausage products remain safe for purchase and consumption. Our sausage products are manufactured at a separate production facility in Baton Rouge...Manda recalled meat products produced at our Baker, Louisiana facility, including roast beef, ham, turkey breast, tasso pork, ham shanks, hog head cheese, corned beef and pastrami with sell by dates between May 13 and July 2, 2013."
