After the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her latest movie, "Miss You Already," Drew Barrymore sat down with The Star to talk about taking a break from acting to become a full-time mother and writing a new book.
"I can't tell you the beauty of how much room that makes for other things," Barrymore shared about stepping out from a "5 a.m. to midnight" acting routine to be the "waker-up" and make breakfast for her kids.
"It makes room for me to be the kind of parent I want to be," the mother of almost three-year-old Olive and 17-month-old Frankie said. "I've done this (acting) for 40 years. There's no way I would trade it for time with my kids."
"That's why I was so angry when (Miss You Already) came my way," she added. "I had just had my second daughter, Frankie, and I was like, 'I can't even read this. How am I going to do this?'"
As much as she wanted to hold acting for now, there was something in Catherine Hardwicke's dramedy that she wasn't able to say no to. It's "such a love story for women and all being done by women," she said. "I got really drawn into what that would be."
Hitting theatres worldwide on November 6, Barrymore (who plays Jess), stars with Toni Collete (starring as Milly) in a film about friendship, motherhood, relationships and tragedy. "I feel like I've been like Milly in my life at some points, but I'm much more like Jess now in my life," the 40-year-old actress added.
"And maybe my girls when they're older can watch this and the whole womanly aspect of it, (which) felt really safe and appropriate for where I was at that moment in my life."
Barrymore, whose net worth is estimated to $125 million, is set to publish her book Wildflower due October 27th.
"I've always wanted to write and I never had the discipline or the objectivity to write in the way I was able to do," she shared. "I think you will be very surprised."
