Food Bank in Arizona in Desperate Need of Repairs and Management

A Greater Littletown Food Bank, located in Arizona, is in desperate need of change, repairs and management.

One building at "Thomas Jay Regional Park has broken windows, crumbling walls, a leaky roof and a sagging floor"  AZStarNet.com reported.

However, no one is taking responsibility for fixing the building. It sits on county land, but the record books and food bank employees are unsure about who actually owns it.

According to AZStarNet, county researchers determined that the county owns the land and the food bank operates on that land rent-free and provides free water.

The food bank also operates on a "$45,00 Community Services Block Grant from Pima County" AZStar said. That money is then supposed to be used to pay for utilities and insurance. The food bank also receives regular donations from companies such as Walmart.

Even with those contributions, food bank volunteers have found that they need to pay for gas for the delivery vehicles themselves and the utilities are two months behind on payment. They have also cut their work schedule from five, to four days a week. Typically 12 people volunteer per day.

"We just really need help down here bad," food bank President Chris Kingston told AZStar.

The food bank is responsible for supplying food to Littletown, Vail and Corona de Tucson with food boxes, clothing and household supplies.

"It's for the people," volunteer Dollie Hurley said. "There's a lot of homeless people. There's a lot of families that need the food and they're very, very thankful that we are here."

The conditions of the building are getting worse.

It's been broken into multiple times and all of the windows are shattered. One collapsed wall was replaced with a piece of sheet metal and many of the refrigerators and freezers are old and leaky. There is also one sink located in the entire building, which isn't connected to a drain.

According to AZStar, County Supervisor Ramon Valadez said he was informed of the situation and is looking into the problem.
