It's official: There will be a sequel to the Ridley Scott classic 'Blade Runner,' and 'Sicario' director Denis Villeneuve will be helming the new movie. In a recent interview with Collider, the 47-year-old filmmaker confirmed that the original Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) will star in 'Blade Runner 2.'
However, this wasn't his idea. Denis Villeneuve was quick to point out that Harrison Ford has been part of the project from the beginning.
"To be very honest with you, Harrison was part of the project before I arrived," Villeneuve said. "He was attached to the project right from the start with Ridley. I met him and he's honestly one of the nicest human beings I've met and is one of my favorite actors of all time, so for me it's a lot of pleasure."
The director also admitted that he is anxious about working on the sequel.
"It's more than nervous, it's a deep fear," Villeneuve explained. "I mean when I heard that Ridley Scott wanted to do another movie in the 'Blade Runner' universe, at first my reaction was that it's a fantastic idea, but it may be a very bad idea."
There is a reason why Denis Villeneuve is nervous about working on a new movie. "I'm among the hardcore fans of 'Blade Runner,'" he admitted. "'Blade Runner' is one of my favorite movies of all time."
Ultimately, the 'Sicario' director decided to take on the project to prove it can be done.
"It's a huge challenge, because you don't want to cut and paste, otherwise why [do it]?" Villeneuve said. "And at the same time you have to respect what was done, so you have to find the right equilibrium between being faithful to the first one and bringing something new at the same time that will make sense to the Blade Runner universe."
As proud he is of working on 'Blade Runner 2,' don't expect Denis Villeneuve to be sharing set photos on social media anytime soon.
"The less you guys will know, the more it's gonna be interesting... I understand enthusiasm, but a thing I love as a film lover is to sit in the theater not knowing a lot of things," he said.
The 'Blade Runner' sequel will start production next summer.
