More often than not, Chipotle news involves how the fast casual chain, one of the primary restaurants of its sort, moves forward towards a more friendly and supposedly ethical viewpoint to its patrons, but there's one non-profit entity that's not having any of it, launching a new campaign against the Tex-Mex chain.
In the latest Chipotle news, Richard Berman's non-profit Center for Consumer Freedom, formerly the Guest Choice Network, recently launched an attack ad on The New York Post directed at the chain, saying their claims of being healthy were unrealistic and downright lying to consumers.
According to Reuters, the ad that made Chipotle news is part of a larger campaign called "Chubby Chipotle" that also has its own website where the chain's executives are called "fast food hypocrites" over portraying themselves as a healthier choice than chains like McDonald's, Burger King or even similarly themed Taco Bell.
Ask Men reports that the CCF, which lobbies for fast food chains as well as sugary drinks and even smoking companies, claims in its Chipotle news that the Tex-Mex fast casual restaurants' marketing is "deceptive," as Chipotle has made a conscious effort over the course of years to push forward its own sustainability by going all natural, getting rid of GMOs as well as antibiotics in their chickens, claiming this is counterproductive when it comes to animals that are actually sick, as that's then the meat eaten by consumers.
In all, the "Chubby Chipotle" campaign claims that eating two of the chain's burritos a week could make a person gain 40 pounds in one year and, of course, this Chipotle news aside, the average meal in the chain is actually about 1,000 calories.
In the past, the CFC has successfully lobbied for causes such as the New York City ban on super-sized sugary drinks.
"This whole thing is a ridiculous smear campaign based on inaccurate representations of our positions and orchestrated by the Center for Consumer Freedom on behalf of its unknown supporters," said Chris Arnold, a rep for Chipotle, according to Business Insider. "We have always been very transparent in the way we run our business and in the challenges we face."
There has been no retort on the part of CFC, but further Chipotle news on this subject is expected.
