Cannabis Vomiting Syndrome: Heavy Users Suffer From Severe Nausea and Pain

British doctors recently saw that patients suffered from 'cannabinoid hypermesis syndrome' as one of the side-effects of heavy cannabis use, with symptoms such as "severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting," reports The Daily Mail.

A number of patients who have checked in at hospitals complaining of CHS symptoms have stated that bathing in hot water has helped them relieve the pain. Some patients report taking hot baths five times a day simply to ease the pain.

The latest findings come as a series of side effects from cannabis use have emerged, among them being that using cannabis may lower the semen quality of males, according to USA Today.

The disease is so little known that it is often misdiagnosed, with many doctors unaware of the link between marijuana and the illness. It was identified for the first time in Australia but the syndrome is beginning to cause alarm in Europe, particularly in the UK.

Dr. Sauid Ishaq, professor of gastroenterology at Birmingham City University, one of the first doctors to study the syndrome, commonly referred to as CHS, in the UK, has stated that the rise in the number of cases has been quite acute, and must be taken seriously.

"This is a highly unrecognized condition, resulting in numerous unnecessary admission. There is an urgent need to highlight this," he said.

Ishaq referred to a 42-year-old man from the East Midlands who was treated eight times for CHS last year.

The man, who had smoked marijuana since the age of 14, complained of abdominal pains, feeling feverish, vomiting and dehydration.

After a series of investigation, it was found that all symptoms ended when he stopped smoking the drug.

According to the National Health Service (NHS), marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in the UK, although its use in recent years has fallen.

Nevertheless, marijuana use in the medical field continues to push forward, with several states in the U.S. set to legalize the drug for medicinal use.
