Misty Copeland Makes Her Broadway Debut In 'On the Town'

American ballet dancer, Misty Copeland, whose genre in dancing is more modernized and sophisticated, made her Broadway debut in the musical show 'On The Town' as Ivy Smith.

Prior to her first appearance in the American ballet theatre, she was a guest judge for three weeks on FOX's reality dancing competition 'So You Think You Can Dance' back in 2014 with the 'On The Town' show producer, Nigel Lythgoe.

Before she was promoted as principal dancer in June, Copeland was previously part of ABT's Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake, where she both played the leading roles of the shows.

Following her growing success in the industry of American Ballet Theatre (ABT), Copeland has been receiving good feedbacks from her spectators.

"Ms. Copeland, perhaps because she holds her body more rigidly, triumphed in that opening Miss Turnstiles number, in which football players toss Ivy overhead as her legs open in a straddle." Journalist Gia Lourlas wrote in her article by New York Times.

She added, "Ms. Copeland, with sweet humor, sailed through them and landed on their shoulders with her arms raised in victory. This was her number, she owned it."

Peter Marks from Washington Post, wrote "Copeland could put the additional experience to good use, because her portrayal at this point exhibits some of the limitations shared by other ballet stars who have taken to theatre stages."

He added, "You tend to get a sustained projection of one emotion, rather than a more textured embodiment of a human."

Reports say that Misty Copeland was wearing all smiles on Tuesday, August 25, as she performed as Ivy Smith, her role described as New York City's "Miss Turnstile".

Copeland's character as Ivy Smith is a continuation of her role all throughout the musical's run until September 6. Besides reigning in the ballet theatre, Misty Copeland was also named as one of 'Time's 100 Most Influential People'.
