Tomatina Festival 2015: Spanish Tomato-Throwing Festival Turns 70 – Google Doodle Celebrates MASSIVE Food Fight! [PHOTOS+VIDEOS]

Today is the 70th anniversary of one of the oddest festivals in the world, the yearly event celebrated in Spain called the Tomatina Festival 2015, an hour in the last Wednesday of August where people in the town of Buñol get completely primal and throw tomatoes at each other.

Yes, the Tomatina Festival 2015 marks the 70th time this crazily fun day happens, where the Eastern Spain town of Buñol, in the Valencia province, throw tomatoes at each other just for the fun of doing this, as well as marking the last days of August and therefore the moment where the days start getting a bit colder.

According to The Mirror, the Tomatina Festival 2015 sees about 40,000 people in Buñol throwing the impressive amount of 40 tons of tomatoes at each other, in what certainly sounds like the most amusing way to spend any day of the year, whatever season it may be.

Although there's more legend than truth at this point, supposedly the Tomatina Festival 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of this peculiar event, and so Vox told the story of the scattered origins of the festival: supposedly, the current tomato-throwing started in 1945 when people rallied against Generalissimo Francisco Franco and authorities of his government to throw tomatoes in protest.

Interestingly enough, while the town of Buñol (where the Tomatina Festival 2015 is celebrated) is part the tomato-rich Valencia province, has always had to import the fruit.

According to The Telegraph, the Tomatina Festival 2015 has been called "the world's biggest food fight," after seven trucks filled with tomatoes drive past the city to provide those present with ammunition, being hosed down just minutes after the food fight ends at noon.

To celebrate the landmark anniversary, Google dedicated a Doodle to the event, where cartoon people can be seen throwing tomatoes at each other.
