Thailand's capital city, Bangkok, suffered a bomb explosion at the Rachaprasong intersection just yesterday. CNN reports that the bombing was aimed at a famous Hindu shrine - Erawan Shrine -- in central Bangkok.
At least 22 people were killed, and approximately 120 others were injured, according to authorities. Twelve of the victims were dead at the scene, while the rest later passed away in hospitals.
Since the location of the bombing is a tourist spot, some foreigners and tourists became casualties as well. The Erawan Emergency Center has said that a Filipino and a Chinese citizen were just two of the people who were killed.
Chief Somyot Pumpanmuang of the national police stated on TV that Chinese tourists who traveled to Thailand from the Philippines were also killed.
The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok has also confirmed this report, stating that three nationals were dead, while another 15 Chinese tourists were injured.
Local police confirms that the bomb was set off after 7PM local time. Authorities believe that the bomb was "detonated on the back of a motorbike."
Police initially described the bomb to be an "improvised device" weighing three kilograms. However, Somyot has said to the state news agency that the device in question was a pipe bomb wrapped in white cloth.
A DJ from Mumbai, India was in the middle of the occurrence. Named Sanjeev Vyas, he recalled what had happened: "It was like this huge gust of wind and debris flying through you. [...] And then I see bodies everywhere, there are cars on fire, there are bikes everywhere. People are screaming."
Thai police continue to search for a man - seen on CCTV surveillance video - who could possibly be connected to the bombings.
