The popular social networking site for posting photos Instagram has recently banned the hash tag EDM from their users. According to Factmag, the spokesperson of the company, Gabe Madway, told Time Magazine about this recent decision they have made in relation to the people posting EDM photos.
This is not the first time the company did it because they have a strict policy when it comes to their users posting nudity and other inappropriate photos on their platform. Madway said that they have blocked the use of this particular hash tag because the contents that people share violate their guidelines on the scope of nudity. This is the same reason why they have banned other hash tags that are related to this category. Although, one hash tag that was lifted was the word "curvy."
Music festivals like the popular Hard Summer in Los Angeles usually gets a lot of posts from Instagram users tagging #EDM. Unfortunately it is also an event where two people died related to drug use. There have been talks about EDM festivals being popular for drug selling and using, which is one of the reasons the company didn't want to be a part of it. Banning the said hash tag will make users no longer find it on the search result of Instagram. The company has not yet officially put it in black and white regarding the said banning of #EDM, however, they can do it without further notice to its users if they feel like it is affecting the policy and guidelines of their site.
EDM fans are a bit upset about it, but there is not much that they can do but to stop using the said hash tag because even if they use it, it will remain useless as it won't be found by anyone who if they try to make it viewable to the millions of Instagram users.
