Disclosure and Sam Smith has combined their musical prowess, yet again, after the commercial success of their first collaboration. This time, it is with "Omen," a track with a much more EDM vibe compared to "Latch".
This fresh track from the duo and crooner makes it their second song to hit the Billboard Top Ten. It debuted at #7 on Billboard's Hot Electronic/Dance chart and posted #7 as well on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart.
According to Nielsen Music, about 23,000 paid downloads were made in the US for their new song "Omen". This qualified it for a #5 slot on Dance/Electronic Digital Songs.
Data from July 24 to July 30 shows that ""Omen" posted the fifth-best sales total for the Dance/Electronic genre of that tracking week too.
The immediate Top Ten ranking of "Omen" is in stark contrast to "Latch" which took 47 weeks from its debut before it hit the charts. It peaked at #7.
"Omen" also marks the third single from their upcoming sophomore album Caracal to chart in Hot Dance/Electronic Songs. The other songs which share this distinction at the moment are "Holding On," which features Grammy-awarding Gregory Porter at #23 and "Bang That" at which hit #37 in May.
According to Jonathan Frahm of Popmatters,
"Like with most breakout hits, there seem to be two very distinct camps that either love or hate Sam Smith depending on which side of the field they're on. I concede to the fact that I'm more dedicated to the former than the latter; it's hard to even fathom disliking a man with as positive a celebrity image and as strong an artistic presence that he maintains. I'm not the biggest fan of Disclosure-EDM is a genre that I can respect, but not one that I'm often buddies within the confines of my own listening compound back home-and frankly, the "nevers" emanating throughout "Latch" annoyed the hell out of me. "Omen", though, is something that I can get behind. The chorus isn't as immediately catchy as "Latch", but it feels much more sinewy than the megahit. It's much less ready to follow the former in terms of sales, but it feels like the better song to me"
