Girl Saves Mother, Baby: 5-Year-Old Hero Climbs 40-Foot Embankment, Saves Mom And Brother After Deadly Crash

A girl saves her mother and baby brother following a car accident they suffered in Alberta. Several weeks after the deadly crash, 5-year-old Lexi Shymanski, who is from British Columbia, is being celebrated as a hero for the courageous deed, according to TIME.

The tale of the girl who saved her mother and baby brother has gone viral on the internet this weekend.

The serious crash took place on June 8. Angela, Lexi and Peter Shymanski, were traveling from Calgary to Prince George when Angela passed out and lost control of their SUV. The car slipped off the road, fell on a 40-foot embankment and hit a tree, with its back wheels in the air.

Lexi, the girl who saved her mother and her brother, was awoken by Peter's cries, who was then 10 months old. Barefoot, the 5-year-old saved her mother and brother by walking up the cliff and back to the road where she flagged down a car to get help.

According to the Citizen, Lexi was able to stop a mom, dad and boy. The man took Peter. A paramedic came later, who stayed with Angele until she became conscious.

The media and public are praising how brave 5-year-old Lexi had been at such a scary time. As for Angela, she said she is still shell shocked by her daughter's actions, but thankful as well that Lexi was able to get help.

"It's crazy. I can only remember one or two times where she got out of her five-point harness previously. She somehow got out, adrenaline or whatever, and barefoot hiked up the embankment," said Angela.

"The guy who came to see us in the hospital, he said the medics and the firemen needed ropes to get up and down that embankment, and she did it barefoot. It was only because she came up and flagged people down that anybody would have stopped," she added, adding how proud she was of Lexi and thankful her 5-year-old daughter knew what to do.

A WetPaint update reported that emergency personnel rescued and flew Angela and Peter to Alberta Hospital. Peter suffered from swelling and bleeding in the brain and needed emergency surgery following the accident.

As for Angela, she is still recovering and remains in a wheelchair. However, she is now able to hold Peter, who is now 4 months old, according to the CBC. They have returned home late June.

Lexi, the girl who saved her mother and baby brother, still suffers from nightmares, but Angela, her mother said, " I'm hoping when things settle down those will disappear. I carry major guilt over this whole thing."

It remains unclear what caused Angela to pass while driving, according to The Inquistr.

Meanwhile, the family has been set up with a GoFundMe page. Angela still hasn't resumed her work as a swimming teacher following the accident. Her husband has taken time off to help with the family's recovery. So far, the fund has already raised more than $13,900 out of a $5,000 goal, reported People.
