WATCH: Amazing Total War: Warhammer Gameplay Footage Finally Unveiled

Fans have been waiting for renowned game developer Creative Assembly to give a glimpse into the next installment of their acclaimed Total War strategy series. Dubbed Total War: Warhammer, the upcoming game sees the strategy masters move away from real life historical settings to a fictional one, as they bring the popular fantasy series to the PC.

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, the developer showed off a closed doors demo of the game to select members of the press. Yesterday, they finally made that presentation public and boy does it look promising.

The demo, called "The Battle of Black Blackfire Pass" showcases a conflict between two of the Warhammer universe's warring factions: The and The Greenskin Orcs. Here's a synopsis of the action:

"The Battle of Black Fire Pass formed the basis for this year's Total War: WARHAMMER E3 press demos, and offers a glimpse of the tremendous diversity of battlefield units, spells, war machines, monstrous creatures and fantasy environments that will appear in the final game. As a Quest Battle available specifically to Karl Franz, it represents one of many bespoke, optional encounters players will unlock as they progress through a campaign with their chosen Legendary Lord."

The video shows off many of the characteristics gamers have come to expect from a Creative Assembly title. The deep, tactical gameplay, cinematic battles, and legions of troops are all there but given a new high fantasy gloss.

The Roman legions and musketeer brigades of previous Total War games have been replaced by hordes of Orcs and Trolls. New hero units that provide certain bonuses to your army are scattered throughout the battlefield while powerful magic users like wizards and sorcerers add a powerful new mechanic to the series' tried and tested formula.

For the first time in the series aerial units will be gracing the battlefield. In the demo we see powerful Dragon and Gryphon mounted troops reign death on the legions below.
