Mariah Carey has appeared in 9 films, but always as an actor. The Christmas special will be her first directorial job. Her film 'Glitter' (2001) received negative critiques. However, her role in the movie, 'Precious' in 2009 was given an award 'Breakthrough Performance Award' in the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Before the release of 'Glitter', Carey suffered from physical and emotional breakdown and was hospitalized. Soon after, she brought out her contract with Virgin Records America for $ 50 million.  It 'led to a decline in her career'. She transferred to Island Records in 2002, but it was only in 2005 that her music career bounced back with 'The Emancipation of Mimi'. The second single in the album, 'We Belong Together' was awarded 'Song of the Decade' by Billboard.

Mariah Carey also has a colorful personal life. She was married to recording mogul Mottola from 1993 to 1998.  While shooting her music video for 'Bye Bye' she met comic actor, Nick Cannon.  After a brief 6 weeks of courtship, they married in 2008, and divorced in 2014. They have fraternal twins, Monroe and Moroccan, now 4 years old.

Last May, the diva opened her Las Vegas residency to run until July at the Caesar's Palace. The show is entitled, 'Mariah #1 to Infinity'. She also performed in the Billboard Music Awards, singing her new single 'Infinity', which is part of her compilation album '#1 to Infinity'.

Since March, she has been reported to be dating Brett Ratner, long-time friend and collaborator. He was her director in the music videos of her hits, 'Thank God I Found You' and 'We Belong Together', and in six others.  He also helmed the 'Rush Hour' movies.
