Wendy’s Chicken 2015: Fast Food Chain Tries Antibiotics Free Chickens In 4 U.S. Test Markets

As concerns over so-called "superbugs" grow due to humankind's overexposure to antibiotics, something that could create resistance in the long term, many restaurants and even companies that sell chicken have taken a step away from using antibiotics on the farms where the animals grow - and that might include Wendy's chicken 2015.

Fast food giant McDonald's announced earlier this year that it'd be phasing out antibiotics in the chickens used for McNuggets, and one of the biggest chicken companies in the world, Tyson Foods, followed quickly; now, it's the turn for another fast food competitor to do its part with Wendy's chicken 2015 strategy.

According to Fortune, Wendy's chicken 2015 strategy could be the first move in the antibiotic-free world, as the chain is currently serving chicken without these growth enhancements in four different markets, namely Orlando, Gainesville, Kansas City and Austin, in their first move to see how phasing this out completely would work for them.

The fast food giant made the Wendy's chicken 2015 announcement earlier this week, as representatives for the company stated that they were considering changing their strategy as customers' concerns over what they eat grows - and this happens at the same time as Wendy's revamps one of its staple products, the grilled chicken sandwich.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, the Wendy's chicken 2015 test will ultimately see whether the company commits to getting rid of antibiotics in their chicken products in the long term, as reactions to this test would be entirely up to customers' response.

CNBC reports that, currently, Wendy's has banned a few antibiotics deemed "medically important for humans," but there are many others that continue to be on their menus, as their policy on the matter officially states that antibiotics used in their animals should "only be used in the prevention, control and treatment of disease."

It's unclear how much will the Wendy's chicken 2015 test last before the chain makes an official decision on the matter.
