It seems that the Greek financial crisis is still making headlines. This time however, it isn't in the economics section but rather the dining one. A Greek restaurant owner in Berlin is bringing the current political struggles of his homeland to light in a limited edition 'Financial Crisis' themed menu.
German website thelocal.de reports that Georgios Chrissidi, a Greek who has been living in Germany for the past 24 years, is bringing Grexit (a reference to Greece's possible exit from the Euro) platters and Angela Merkel themed deserts to his Mediterranean restaurant, simply named 'Z', in Berlin's Kreuzberg district.
He tells thelocal that the genesis of the idea was two weeks ago, when the crisis was in full swing.
"At first I had my doubts, thinking people might react negatively," he told the site." But that's not been the case at all. People laugh when they see the menu items. They find it funny, and they're quite easy going about it."
The menu is composed of seven entirely new dishes inspired by the key figures in the crisis. Greek leader Alex Tsipras has been immortalized in the form of an appetizer while the International Monetary Fund (IMF) gets a plate of calamari.
According to thelocal, the 'Schaublexit Platter', which takes its name from German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble, is a real crowd pleaser.
The dish is lamb-based, Chrissidi explained - and his reasoning suggests the restaurateur hasn't been overly impressed by Schäuble's negotiating tactics. I was thinking of the summer times in Greece, when you try and drive to the beach but you can't, because all these sheep stand in the road and block your way," he laughed.
If you want to get a taste of Restaurant Z's take on an economic meltdown you have until mid-August to book a reservation.
