Jurassic World Sequel Is Happening, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard Will Return

It's official now. In an announcement that surprised no one, Universal Pictures has confirmed that a sequel to their world conquering summer blockbuster Jurassic World is happening.

The dinosaur disaster epic has dominated the box office this year, gobbling up a staggering $1.5 billion in global box office receipts. The film is now the third-highest grossing movie in history. It recently overtook Disney and Marvel Studios superhero team up 'The Avengers' to climb into the number three spot. Jurassic World also took The Avengers' title of biggest opening weekend ever, raking in $208 million when it opened in the US last month. Now all eyes will be on Jurassic World as it looks to unseat James Cameron's two blockbusters Titanic and Avatar in the pecking order of highest grossing films ever.

The film still has a long way to go however. Reaching Titanic ($2 Billion) and Avatar ($3 Billion) is likely a longshot at best. But it has yet to open in Japan (Aug. 5) so there may yet still be some tickets left to be sold.

The bulk of Jurassic World's haul has come from North America, with $611.23m so far. However, almost 60% of its gross has come from other countries, including $228.7m in China and $88.7m in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

No director for the sequel has yet to be announced. But Universal did reveal that the first film's director Colin Trevorrow will be co-writing the sequel with Derek Connolly. Franchise creator Steven Spielberg will be back as producer together Frank Marshall. But, most importantly, Jurassic World's star duo of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are both signed on for number 2.

The Park is set to reopen on June 22, 2018.
