Sherlock's Martin Freeman Teases His Role in Captain America: Civil War

Who could Martin Freeman be playing in Marvel's upcoming blockbuster Captain America: Civil War? The Hobbit and Sherlock star is set to appear in the film when it hits theatres next summer but his role, up until today at least, was still pretty much a mystery.

Not anymore. Italian website Badtaste.it was recently able to secure an interview and Freeman, and he divulged a little bit of information about his character:

"You're not quite sure which side he's on. It looks a little bit like he's playing one game when actually he's playing another. It's the kind of character I like because it's ambiguous and because you don't know whether he's good or bad. I like that area that isn't black or white; I like the greys."

Freeman doesn't go as far as to say who exactly he is playing, but it's certainly a start. Here's some additional info:

"He works for the American government, He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes' power."

Following Freeman's interview, the internet kicked into high gear, trying to speculate on who Freeman might be playing. Cinema Blend was able to come up with some suggestions:

"...some suggesting he could be playing the Wakanda-linked Everett K. Ross or Edward Chase, the Prime Minister of England. Going by Freeman's description, however, it sounds much more likely that he is instead playing Henry Peter Gyrich, a character first introduced to Marvel Comics in 1977 as a special government liaison to the Avengers."

Could this rumour be true? Or will Freeman be playing a wholly original character. We'll have to wait and see.

Captain America: Civil War hits theatres on May 6, 2016 and features an all-star cast headlined by Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan. Heroes from around the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as Iron Man, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Ant-Man will all make appearances as well.
